There's something rather nice about going to bed at sea and arriving in another country. But the timing has to work once you get off.
The arrival time changes everything
A night crossing sounds ideal until you realise you may reach land long before your hotel room is ready. Look beyond the published arrival and think about breakfast, onward transport and the first part of the day.
Give yourself a real chance to sleep
Cabins are worth comparing, but availability and facilities differ. Pack a separate overnight bag and don't assume you'll be allowed to stay in the car or motorhome during the sailing.
Make the first drive easy
If you'll be driving, avoid a packed schedule immediately after leaving the ship. A modest first leg and somewhere for a proper break can be a much better start to the holiday.
Routes to compare
A few things you might be wondering
Are overnight ferries good for road trips?
They can be, especially when they replace a hotel night and still leave you rested enough to drive.
Can I sleep in my car?
Do not assume so; follow the operator's vehicle-deck rules.
